Mineral Processing Industry to Support National Strategic Needs

Jakarta, July 14, 2026 — Danantara Indonesia held Danantara's Advanced Materials Industry Dialogue: From Minerals to Manufacturing at Wisma Danantara Indonesia from Thursday to Friday (July 9–10). Bringing together representatives from ministries and government institutions, SOEs, and academia, the event aimed to strengthen synergy and collaboration among stakeholders in developing a more integrated and sustainable advanced materials industry that is aligned with the national development agenda.

The forum also featured four keynote speakers who provided strategic direction: Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Prof. Brian Yuliarto, Ph.D.; Deputy Head of BP BUMN Tedi Bharata; Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti; and Managing Director of Industrialization at Danantara Indonesia Ardy Muawin. The speakers highlighted the important role of the advanced materials industry in supporting economic growth.

CEO of Danantara Indonesia Rosan Roeslani, in his video remarks, emphasized that Indonesia must become a sovereign player in the global supply chain. He noted that, for too long, much of the added value from Indonesia's mineral wealth has been captured by other countries.

"It is time for Indonesia to move up the advanced materials value chain. Indonesia is blessed with extraordinary mineral wealth, from nickel, bauxite, copper, and tin to rare earth elements. These materials are the foundation of future technologies, including electric vehicle batteries, semiconductors, defense, and clean energy. Yet for decades, we have too often stopped at the point of extraction: exporting raw materials, then buying back finished products at many times the price," Rosan added.

On this occasion, a memorandum of understanding on the development of advanced materials, or critical minerals downstreaming, was also signed among PT Mineral Industri Indonesia (Persero), PT LEN Industri (Persero), PT Krakatau Steel (Persero) Tbk, and PT Perminas (Persero). The collaboration aims to optimize the supply-offtake of critical minerals and advanced materials for domestic strategic industry needs, accelerate the realization of a large-scale national advanced materials industry through joint technology development, and support high value-added national economic growth through strategic industrial programs, including but not limited to national electric cars and motorcycles, aerospace, maritime, basic components, defense, and electricity.

Chief Technology Officer of Danantara Indonesia Sigit P. Santosa stated that the development of Indonesia's midstream advanced materials industry should be seen as a key pillar of the country's broader industrial transformation toward technology-based manufacturing and stronger participation in future global supply chains. He emphasized that Indonesia has the opportunity to build industrial capabilities beyond raw material extraction by capturing regional demand, developing technology partnerships, and creating the scale needed to compete in high-growth strategic sectors.

"Indonesia's strength lies not only in the availability of minerals, but also in our ability to transform them into an advanced materials industrial ecosystem that supports batteries, clean energy, defense, transportation, and other strategic technologies of the future. Nickel remains an important advantage, but the larger agenda is to build a broader, technology-driven, and globally competitive industrial capability," Sigit said.

In addition to the dialogue forum, the event also featured an exhibition of minerals and advanced materials products and their applications from MIND ID, PT Krakatau Steel (Persero) Tbk, and DEFEND ID. For Indonesia, industrialization is no longer an option, but a strategic necessity.
