Transforming the Sanur SEZ: Danantara Indonesia Accelerates Investment in the Health Tourism Sector

Bali, 25 June 2025 — The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, inaugurated The Sanur, Indonesia's first Health Special Economic Zone (SEZ), on Wednesday (25/06). The inauguration marks an important milestone in the transformation of Indonesia’s tourism and healthcare sectors and strengthens Indonesia's position as a leading health tourism destination in Southeast Asia.

As Indonesia's first Health SEZ, The Sanur is a National Strategic Project designed as an integrated ecosystem delivering world-class healthcare services, modern wellness facilities, and holistic healing experiences inspired by Indonesia’s natural and cultural heritage.

In his remarks, President Prabowo Subianto expressed appreciation for all parties involved in initiating and developing the Sanur SEZ, describing it as a historic breakthrough for healthcare services in Indonesia. "I would also like to convey my gratitude and appreciation to all those who have pioneered the development of this Special Economic Zone dedicated to healthcare. I believe this is a breakthrough, the first of its kind in our Republic," the President said.

In Southeast Asia, health tourism is an industry with an estimated annual value of up to IDR 800 trillion and is projected to grow by more than 12% annually. With the establishment of The Sanur, it is estimated that by 2030, around 4% to 8% of Indonesians who previously sought medical treatment overseas will be able to receive care at The Sanur. Accordingly, The Sanur's contribution to national GDP is projected to help reduce outbound foreign exchange by up to IDR 86 trillion and increase foreign exchange inflows by IDR 19 trillion. The Sanur is also expected to create 18,375 jobs.

On the same occasion, Danantara Indonesia Chief Executive Officer, Rosan Roeslani, emphasized that the Sanur SEZ underscores Indonesia’s strategic assets, particularly in tourism and healthcare. "We ensure these assets are managed optimally to drive investment growth. Through the Sanur SEZ, we see strong potential to attract global investors in two major industries that serve as key engines of the national economy, namely healthcare and tourism," Rosan said.

Developed on approximately 41.26 hectares, The Sanur is being positioned as a health and wellness destination in Indonesia, supported by integrated healthcare and tourism facilities. These include an International Medical Facility, namely Bali International Hospital, with capacity to serve up to 240,000 patients, along with international clinics featuring Centers of Excellence covering CONGO (Cardiology, Oncology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Orthopedics), stem cell services, aesthetic surgery, fertility treatments, eye specialists, and geriatric care. The area also hosts internationally recognized clinics, including Alster Lake Clinic, a Germany-based cell therapy provider focused on healthy aging and self-regeneration.

The Sanur also features five-star hotel accommodation, including The Meru Sanur and Bali Beach Hotel, described as the tallest hotel in Bali with 10 floors and 274 rooms. In addition, the zone includes an international-standard convention center with capacity for 5,000 participants, a 4-hectare ethnobotanical garden, and core infrastructure such as a groundwater tank, waste treatment plant, temporary waste facility, and power house, as well as a command center, commercial areas, and the Sanur MSME Center to support local enterprises.

Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Erick Thohir, underscored the importance of delivering high-quality healthcare domestically. "The President has consistently reminded us that we are a great nation, capable of standing on our own. Yet the reality is that each year around 2 million Indonesians seek treatment overseas and spend nearly IDR 150 trillion. This is a major challenge that must be addressed systematically, and the Sanur SEZ is part of the answer," Erick said.

Meanwhile, the state-owned aviation and tourism holding company PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (Persero), or InJourney, through its subsidiary, InJourney Hospitality, as the operator of the Sanur SEZ, remains committed to developing the area as an important step in supporting Indonesia’s economic growth.

InJourney President Director, Maya Watono, stated that tourism is a backbone of Indonesia's economy and a key source of foreign exchange earnings. "We project that the Sanur SEZ will open thousands of new job opportunities and help increase the number of international visitors who travel to Indonesia for tourism and medical services," Maya concluded.
